If you’re living with significant pain and discomfort from an orthopedic(musculoskeletal) condition, you know firsthand how much it can affect your quality of life. Seemingly simple tasks like walking, climbing stairs or evenstanding become much more difficult. On a positive note, our bone, joint and muscle specialists are here to get you moving again.
Department of Neurosurgery at Harmony Hospital is one of the leaders in neurosciences, an accomplishment made possible by the acclaimed team of neurologists and neurosurgeons, advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.
Harmony Hospital neurosurgeons are on the leading edge of treating neurological conditions using the latest techniques and innovations and in neurosurgery, such as robotics, minimally invasive surgery, intraoperative MRI, stereotactic radiosurgery, computer-assisted brain surgery, and deep brain stimulation.
TREATMENT & PROCEDURES
Neurosurgeons at Harmony Hospital diagnose and surgically treat conditions of the brain and spine. The Department offers expertise in general neurosurgery, brain tumor surgery, complex spine disorders, stereotactic radiosurgery, and vascular diseases.
This type of procedure is performed primarily to operate on cysts, aneurysms, tumors (cancerous and non-cancerous), and other abnormalities present on the skull base, upper vertebrae, or underside of the brain.
Typically, skull base & spine surgery is performed using minimally invasive methods, using an endoscope through the mouth, nose, or by creating a small incision above the eye. These procedures require a multi-disciplinary approach that involves neurosurgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, and radiologists. In some cases, it may be necessary to create an opening in the skull to facilitate surgical maneuvers.
When a tumor lies inside the dural lining.
Surgery is done to remove tumors in the spinal region. The most common tumor encounter is metastasis and it causes vertebral bone damage or spinal cord or nerve compression. The aim of surgery in such cases is to decompress the spinal cord adequately so that neurology recovers and to provide strength to the spine column by inserting pedicle screws and rods. At the same time specimen can be sent for histopathological and immunohistochemistry markers study, which help in identifying the primary source of the tumor and to start the chemotherapy or radiotherapy accordingly.
Depending on the type and location of the spinal tumor, possible surgical procedures to remove part of, or the entire tumor include:
Surgery for the spinal tumor is recommended based on a variety of factors such as:
Type, size, and stage of the tumor.
This is a procedure performed to correct a congenital disorder known as AVM, where there is a formation of tangled arteries and veins which can lead to seizures, internal bleeding, and neurological symptoms. It is possible to have an AVM without any adverse effects, but it is considered to be better to remove the risk through surgery. AVM’s can form in the spinal cord, brain, and brainstem, and are revealed using special neuroradiological scans.
